What Are Sex Offenders Lookups?

Sex offender lookups provide the public with information about the location of convicted sexual offenders. There are various degrees of sexual offense, ranging from misdemeanor charges up to felonies. Because of the very sensitive nature of these types of crimes and the high risk of reoccurrence even if an individual serves time and is released, a database of sexual offenders in any area is available. Most of the time, local law enforcement agencies monitor the movements of sexual offenders within the state’s laws.

Keep in mind that each state sets rules and requirements about what type of information is to be shared with the public. In some states, sexual offenders do not have limitations and may not need to provide information about their location to the police. In most states, though, any sexual offender charged with and convicted of a crime must keep in contact with police to update about where they live. Probationary officers or the police department must monitor any restrictions on that individual. Most states provide these records to the public.

When an individual is charged with and convicted of a sexually oriented criminal action, the court will determine the proper punishment. In very limited cases, it is possible the individual will not have to register as a sex offender. However, most situations involve the registration as a sex offender within the state or county. When this occurs, the individual must always update the local police department of their address.

The public that wishes to know where sex offenders live within their local area can gather that information through a lookup service. Some local law enforcement agencies provide this information (some online and most with in-person documentation.) There are other websites and databases available as well, including those through the Federal Bureau of Investigation. All of these agencies provide information about the individual.

The information included in the sex offender lookup usually includes the name of the individual, the charge he or she is convicted of and his or her address. This information may also provide a picture of the individual.

The release of this information is to keep the public and law enforcement aware. It does not give locals the right or ability to harass any individual. Since most people who must register as a sex offender have already served time or paid restitution as the court requires, the individuals are free to live and work throughout the country. However, sex offender lookup information can help parents and the general public to ensure they know who is living nearby to their home, schools and playgrounds.

Individuals who wish to learn about any sexual predators or sexually oriented criminals can use this type of lookup to determine who is in the location. Information contained as well as the availability of these records is very much something that differs from one state to the next. However, most information does remain available to the public as long as the courts require the individuals to maintain this registration.
