Ways to Obtain DMV Records in Tennessee
In Tennessee, individuals can obtain a copy of their driverís record in one of several ways. These are called motor vehicle records or MVRs. The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security managers these records. It is important to properly check these records on a routine basis to ensure their accuracy. However, these records also are often necessary for pre-employment screening and insurance needs.
Ways to Obtain a Copy of Your Tennessee DMV Records
The Tennessee driving record is available to those who request it for multiple purposes. These requests can be made by most people including for legal requirements, government or business needs, insurance, statistical research, or for employment background checks. To obtain these records, choose one of the methods below.

Online Access

The Tennessee Department of Safety provides access to these records online. You can obtain them at the Department of Safety's website. To do so, you will need to provide a name and date of birth as well as the driver's license number. There is a fee for accessing these records of $7. Once you provide this, you will be able to download a PDF file of the record. It can be printed from this file.

In Person Access

Individuals can visit any Department of Safety location to obtain a copy of their MVR as well. This is another way to access the record immediately. You can visit any Tennessee Driver Service Center to gain this information. You will need to complete a Request for Record Individual Authorization using the state's Form SF-1282. You will need to pay a $5 fee for this service.

By Mail

It is also possible to obtain a copy of a driver record through the mail. To do this, individuals will need to complete Form SF-1282 as noted above. There is also a need to provide your driver's license number and other details. There is a $5 fee for this copy of a record. Mail the completed form to the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, MVR Request, P.O. Box 945, Nashville, Tennessee 37202.

What Information Is Included on an MVR?

The state will provide as much information on the driver's history through this document as is available. It will include:
  • The person's driver's license status such as whether it is active, suspended or revoked (as well as a history of this)
  • The driver's history of moving violations and other types of traffic violations, citations and any fees paid.
  • All points held against the driver.
  • Any information about accidents the driver was involved in.
  • Any endorsements or classification information for the driver.
Once you receive a copy of your Tennessee MVR, it is important to look it over to ensure it is accurate. If there are any instances of errors on it, visit a local Department of Transportation Service Center to report the information. This is the only place that it canbe changed. You will need to have information to verify the error.
