Obtaining Louisiana DMV Records
Do you know what kind of information is on your Louisiana DMV records? Although most records are accurate, you can't be 100 percent sure until you check them yourself. Why is this important? Mistakes on a driving record can cause problems with your Louisiana driving privileges and your auto insurance premiums may be more than they should be. If you'd like to obtain a copy of your driving record, you can use a third-party records service or contact your Office of Motor Vehicles through the Louisiana Department of Corrections.

Can Anyone Access My Records?

In the state of Louisiana, your driving information is protected by the Federal Driver Privacy Protection Act. However, this law allows certain organizations and businesses to see your records when it relates to official business. Here are some of the allowed instances:
  • Law enforcement agencies
  • Insurance companies
  • Employers
  • Court systems
  • Local, state, and federal government agencies
You may access your records with the right forms. If you give someone written permission they may obtain a copy of your driving record.

What's On My Record?

A typical Louisiana driving record may contain the following details:
  • Status of your driver's license - includes the issuing and expiration dates and if the license is suspended or revoked.
  • Traffic accidents you were directly involved in
  • Traffic tickets, violations, and convictions - some violations remain on your record for as long as ten years.
  • Status of commercial driver's licenses

Where Can I Get My Records?

It's possible to obtain your driving records, three different ways:
  • Internet
  • Through the mail
  • Visit your local DMV office
