Getting Indiana DMV Records
You may not find a DMV if you check into Indiana DMV records. That's because the official office governing driver's licenses and other vehicle issues is called the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles or BMV for short. Many people in search of their driving records go the BMV website but you may also use third-party services, and it can be faster and easier. Here are some helpful tips for getting your records from the Indiana BMV.

Do I Really Need My Driving Records?

Most records are accurate, but it's possible for wrong information to end up on your reports. In fact, if you have misinformation on your driving record, you could have one of several problems, such as:
  • Higher auto insurance premiums - insurance companies look at your record to determine what kind of risk you represent.
  • Problems getting a job - this is a major consideration if you are looking for CDL jobs in Indiana.
  • You never know when someone plans to steal your identity. Someone posing as you may buy and register cars in Indiana and their violations would show up on your record. Knowing what's on your driving record can be highly beneficial.
  • What Info is On My Illinois BMV Records?

A typical Indiana driving report contains license info like:
    • Name and contact info
    • Expiration date
    • Points
    • Status
    • Type of license you own
    • Suspensions
    • Convictions
    • Disqualifications
    • Driver remarks
If you have a CDL, similar info is displayed, including class, restrictions, and endorsements.
    Title Records
A title record is used to prove that you own a specific vehicle and to check if the registration is still valid. It may also show title history and lien holders.
Who Can Gain Access to Your Records?
    • Law enforcement
    • The courts
    • Government agencies
    • Those with power of attorney
    • Matters of vehicle safety or emissions
    • Businesses verifying information you gave them
    • Matters involving lawsuits and legal issues
    • Research
    • Insurers
    • Impound companies
    • Employers checking CDL applicants
    • Private toll businesses
    • Surveyors and marketers with written consent
    Getting Your Indiana Driving Records
There are two types of driving records you may order from the Indiana BMV:
    • VDR - viewable driving records and these can be viewed online for no charge.
    • ODR - official driving records. These records are certified and can be used as legal proof or evidence.
Indiana driving records may be ordered online, in person, or through the mail system. You can buy, download, and print your ODR and the cost has been reduced to $4.00. You must first sign up for a myBVD account at the Indiana.gov website. Driver legends (explaining the abbreviations on records) are also available online. You may view your title info online too.
In person and mail requests must include an Indiana form 53789. Make sure to follow all the instructions and do not use pencil on the form. Blue or black colored ink or typing is recommended. A certified ODR is $4.00. Certified driver history is $8.00. Mail forms to: "BUREAU OF MOTOR VEHICLES Attn: Records Request 100 N. Senate Ave., Rm N412 Indianapolis, IN 46204". For more info or if you have errors on your records, call the Indiana BMV at 1-888-692-6841.
