General Information On Tennessee Criminal Records
Tennessee criminal records can provide a vast amount of information for those that need it. This information can contain personally identifiable information as well as any type of infraction an individual is charged with and convicted of over his or her lifetime. A criminal record is created at the time of any infraction in the state. Law enforcement sources come together to create a linked computerized system so that finding information about an individual is easy to do no matter where in the state the individual is.
For many individuals, it is important to gather Tennessee criminal records. Businesses often use these records to determine if an individual is a safe hire as a standard part of the application process. In most cases, individuals will need to sign a waiver giving the potential employer the right to pull criminal records as a part of a background check. This information can also be beneficial to those looking to get into a contract, lease or other formal arrangement with individuals.
In the state of Tennessee, criminal records are available to the public because the state has an open records policy. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is one of the best sources for this information since it is charged with maintaining all information within a database. Individuals and private organizations can run a background check to include criminal records by accessing this agency's databases of information. It is possible to do this through the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations computerized database. It is also possible to gather additional information by contacting the agency at the following address:
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation
901 RS Gass Blvd
Nashville, Tennessee 37216
There is an application fee of $29 per each applicant screened through this process. This is an administrative fee paid to the agency.
A second option is to run a search through the Tennessee Open Records Information Service, or TORIS. It will provide a criminal history check that includes all data based on the information provided. Individuals are encouraged to provide as much information as is possible when creating this search. This includes the full legal name of the individual, date of birth, permanent resident address and Social Security number, if possible. However, this agency states that unless a fingerprint scan is done in person, it cannot guarantee that the person's file is accurate to that individual.
There are some restrictions on finding Tennessee criminal records. For example, some people who have no criminal history will not have this type of record available. Secondly, no one who is a minor at the time of a crime being committed will have an active, searchable file. Juvenile records in the state remain closed unless a judge orders them to be available. Finally, judges can also rule that some records are to have restricted access, or not access at all, depending on the circumstances related to the records. Sealed records are not common. Individuals who need these records can often find them through these databases, which often require just basic information to search them.
