General Information On Maine Criminal Records
For those who wish to learn about a person's criminal activities and convictions, it is possible to do so by accessing that individual's Maine criminal records. In the state of Maine, most criminal records are accessible by the public. Though there are restrictions and limitations, some of this information maintains easy access for individuals who require it especially since the state has computerized its files. This makes it easier for individuals to find information needed on an individual. However, there are some limits and the process is not always as straightforward as many would like.

The state of Maine criminal records are maintained by the State Bureau of Identification, which is a division of the Maine State Police. However, local law enforcement agencies, county offices and courts do have access to these files as well. Information contained in these files is through, but not all of that information is available to the general public. Only information related to the individual’s misdemeanor and felony convictions is provided to the public when there is a request for release of information. Further information is only available through a court order from the Maine courts.

Individuals who wish to gather Maine criminal records can do so in several ways. There is no written waiver required to access this information, though. There is a fee of $20 per name or fingerprint search. The state does note that fingerprint resources are the best since there is no doubt the file that is returned is from the individual requesting it or on that individual. However, name searches are mostly accurate when additional information is provided, including a person's full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number and description. Individuals who wish to gather this information can contact the following agency for additional information.

Maine State Police
State Bureau of Identification
42 State House Station
Augusta, Maine 04333

It is also possible to gather this information by placing a request over the phone. This is done by calling 207 624-7240. The agency does not answer questions regarding records over the phone in detail. It can also provide individuals with a list of resources as well as finger print testing kits if requested.

The information contained in Maine records is from incidents occurring just in the state. This includes information from all of Maine's counties, including city and township records. It also contains information related to juveniles, but that information is not available to the general public itself. However, there are no details from other states. An individual may commit a crime in another state and have a conviction and it may not be included in Maine's records. The state also does not record any federal information, including any federal convictions.

Gathering Maine criminal records can be one of the best ways to verify a person's criminal background. It is often necessary to do this prior to hiring an individual or prior to bringing that individual into a lease agreement. However, individuals may not use this information if the information is from a juvenile.
