Washington- How to Obtain Arrest Records
While many government agencies have automatic access to be able to inspect your arrest record, many non-government agencies still require access to your record, but you may need to give consent before they can inspect the entire set of data.
This can be achieved through your state records or via a private organization who will charge a fee for their work.
Accessing another individualís records is not automatic and often requires consent.
Individuals can check the arrest record of fellow neighbors, childrenís friendís families, and others.

What Is Available in The Record?

Your full personal details can be seen on your arrest record. This will include your real name and any aliases that you may choose to use. Your date of birth and address will be listed along with a photograph and any fingerprint information.
All arrests will be detailed along with further information confirming any criminal record data. This will include misdemeanors and felony convictions.
Your record will include any current pending charges and warrants and may list any charges where you have been acquitted, or they were dismissed.
A variety of websites offer access to arrest records for a small fee. These are mostly provided by non-government agencies and only accessible online.
The Washington State Patrol can provide criminal history record information. Full reports are issued after fingerprint-based records are provided as part of the necessary application process.
You can complete an online application and pay the required fee or complete a downloadable PDF form and mail it with payment to their office.

Using access to the records

Laws allow you to access your own records and you will have to prove your identity, which is a simple process.
You cannot refuse government agencies from accessing your records when they require information for your suitability for security clearances and when you apply for law or medical colleges.
Other individuals or companies may require access to your records to consider you for property rental, fostering or adopting children or to clarify your access to international travel.
A Certificate of Actual Innocence will be required where your record shows an arrest with no further action or criminal record was recorded, but your data remains intact.
Where you meet the full qualifying criteria part of your record may be expunged and will not be shown to non-government agencies. Some government agencies will still have access to your expunged record, information and data.
You cannot refuse access to anyone, individuals or organizations, to inspect a record on the sex offenderís registry.

Why you need to know the difference between background and arrest records

By understanding the differences, you will be able to grant the right for individuals or future employers to investigate your background.
Specifically, a background check provides detailed information about your marital status, driving offenses, bankruptcy applications, and your current and previous addresses.
A detailed arrest and criminal record check will list all arrests, whether convicted or not, details about penalties and prison terms and personal information. This partincludes your height, weight, race, tattoos, and your eye and hair color.
