What are Rhode Island Criminal History Reports?

If you were pulled over for a speeding ticket last year, chances are, this won't be listed in your criminal record. These records usually have more serious offenses like major misdemeanors or felony convictions. It could include thefts, assaults, DUI convictions, burglary, probation, plea bargains, and other court issues.

Who Has the Rhode Island Criminal Records?

Criminal history information is stored by the Bureau of Criminal Identification under the Rhode Island Attorney General office. There are two methods for ordering your criminal records. You may obtain them in person or through the mail. At present, the state of Rhode Island does not have a way to access criminal records online.

Getting Your State Background Check

If you want to visit the BCI (Bureau of Criminal Identification) in person, here is the address of the location:

They are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. They are closed on holidays, and this is a link to their holiday closures.
When you arrive at the Attorney General's office go to the BCI window. Make sure you have a valid ID, and the fee is $5.00. You can pay with:
  • Check
  • Money order
  • Credit card (processing fee applies)
They do not accept cash and make the check or money order out to "BCI." You are only allowed one background check for each person. If you have more than one request, you must leave them at the window and pick them up later. However, it's easier to simply mail in multiple requests.

Mail

Download and complete the required form. Make sure to include a photo ID copy and a money order or check made out to the BCI for $5.00. You'll also need to include a SASE. It usually takes about seven business days to receive your Rhode Island criminal records.

3rd Party Criminal Record Request

To get a Rhode Island background check on someone else, you must fill out the proper release form. You may either mail in the request or visit the BCI in person.
