In Search of North Carolina Criminal History Records
Do you plan to apply for employment soon? If so, your potential employer may request a pre-screening process that includes a criminal history background check. Information on this record can make the difference between getting a good job and not being hired. There are other reasons to request a copy of your records, and in North Carolina, you have three options.

What's On My Record?

Criminal records may contain arrest information. However, simple misdemeanors like shoplifting or public intoxication may not be available. Felony arrests and convictions and serious misdemeanors may show up. Juvenile records are not normally available. If you want to know what's on the report, you have to request a copy of your records.

How to Order a North Carolina Criminal Record Report

Unlike most states (which have few options) you have three choices:
  • Clerk of the Superior Court
  • State Bureau of Investigation (also called the SBI)
  • Private vendors offering criminal record check services

Clerk of the Superior Court

When you go to the Superior Court, you can request a certified criminal record. You'll need to visit the courthouse in your county. You can check out this link to find the contact information of your local courthouse. It's important to know that this search will only give you the results of county records. You cannot order a statewide search through this option. However, you can order name-based search records for yourself and others.

Mail Requests

You can contact the Superior Court by mail to request certified records from your county. Download, print, and complete Form AOC-CR-314. Then mail in the form with the $25.00 fee. Payment must be certified check or money order and mail it to your county courthouse.

You can order records from the State Bureau of Investigation. You will receive criminal records on yourself or others from the entire state of North Carolina. These records are more accurate and complete because they are based on fingerprint searches and not names. To find the right form, click this link to the forms page.
In order to request records, you have to validate your identity by submitting a fingerprint card. You can visit your local police office for this service. According to NC law, you may only request your records and not those of others. The record is called "Right to Review" and costs $14.00
The fee for an Identity History Summary check from the FBI is $18.00, and it covers the entire country.

Private Vendors

Sometimes it's easier to go through third-party services to get the records that you need. They know where to look and understand all the rules and laws pertaining to North Carolina criminal records.
