What is a New York Criminal History Report?

Where Are My Records Kept?

Records may be kept at one of two sources. The CIU (Criminal Identification Unit) is a branch of the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Records are also kept at the Unified Court System.

If you wish to request a copy of your own New York criminal records, you can visit the OCA (New York State Office of Court Administration) website and conduct an online search. Each CHRS (criminal history record search) costs $65.00. This is a name-based search, and it's important to enter the name exactly how it's spelled along with the correct DOB.
You can perform background checks for pre-screening at the website. The info you receive is public records concerning convictions and cases that are pending or open. Info from all NY counties is included, and so are details from local municipalities and cities.

  • Info that the Office of Court Administrationís policies does not disclose due to policy
  • Youthful Offender info
  • Cases transferred to the family courts system
  • FBI background checks
  • Nationwide background checks
  • Misdemeanors over ten years old
  • Charges and cases where fingerprinting is not required
  • Village and town criminal records between 1991 and 2002

How to Get Your Online New York Criminal Records Report
Visit the Direct Access page. Check out this page for visual access. It shows you exactly how to use the site for obtaining records. You can access this site for both personal and corporate accounts, and the $65.00 fee can be paid with a debit card, credit card, or ACH (checking account).
Mail Requests
Download and fill out the application form. Include the info requested. Read the form carefully and follow all instructions. You can have your records emailed or mailed to you. The mailing address is:

Fingerprint Based Record Searches
You can receive an unsuppressed criminal record based on fingerprint searches, but you must go through MorphoTrust and submit your fingerprints for identification.
