Criminal Records in Nevada
Did you know that some of the discretions of your recent past may show up in your Nevada criminal records? For example, you may apply for a job, and your potential employer will run a background check. It's a good idea to know what's on that record before people start to check it out. Nevada is protective of their citizens' privacy and performing a background check on someone isn't a simple matter. However, it's possible to find a lot of information if you know what to do and where to look.

What Are Your Nevada Criminal Records?

Criminal records may include arrests, felony convictions, arraignments, charges for serious offenses. This may include DUI convictions and other issues.

What Info is Not Available?

Criminal record data is limited on Nevada criminal records and it's not considered to be a matter of public record. In fact, there is only one method for getting records and the requirements are specific. You can't request juvenile criminal records and most misdemeanor charges will probably not show up in a report.

How Can I Request Nevada Background Checks?

First, you must contact the Nevada Criminal History Repository. They can only provide information on state offenses and cannot give you info on other states or matters associated with the FBI. Only you can request your records. In other words, if you want to check on a babysitter or gardener, you cannot do it.
You'll need to get an official form and you can download one by clicking this link to the Nevada Department of Public Safety Records, Communications and Compliance Division. This form has two pages of instructions, and the form is on the third page of the document. Here is what you need to do:
  • Complete the form
  • Provide proof of identification - the state of Nevada requires applicants to submit a fingerprint card to verify ID. You have to use an FD-258 fingerprint card and fill out all the information. Your card must contain a flat impression of all ten fingers and it must be done by a certified technician. Also, you cannot submit a copy of the fingerprint card. Only originals are accepted.
  • The fee is $23.50 and they only accept money orders or certified checks (no personal checks or cash). Make sure the check or money order is payable to the "Nevada Department of Public Safety."
  • Staple everything together
After your request is received, it can take as long as 45 days to receive a response. If no Nevada criminal records are found, you will receive a letter informing you of such.

Is Additional Criminal Record Data Available?

Nevada counties have public records you can search and this can sometimes be helpful. You may go to the Nevada state sex offender registry. This is a free service that lets you see if a person is a registered sex offender. You have the option of searching for offenders by name. However, if you would like to see offenders living in a specific region (like your neighborhood), you can also perform a geographic search.
